Throwback: Steve Smith reveals ‘club cricketer’ comment by Kevin Pietersen

Steve Smith has emerged as a consistent cricketer for Australia, especially in Test cricket. The Aussie Test skipper commenced his career as a leg-spinner, however, has developed himself into a stalwart of Australia’s batting lineup. He is currently playing in a Test series against South Africa in the Kingsmead Stadium in Durban.

Nevertheless, the cricketer has hogged the headlines on several occasions owing to controversies, both on and off the field. The Ashes is a high-profile bilateral series between Australia and England and is deemed as an intensified tournament. Steve Smith has recently been interviewed by the Rajasthan Royals franchise where he talked about his rivalry with Kevin Pietersen during the Ashes.

Pietersen’s jibe at Smith  

“Too much sledging, not sure about the best part, Kevin Pietersen called me a club cricketer a few times during the Ashes and I guess I proved him wrong a little bit” Smith was quoted as saying in the exclusive interview. He also spoke about his childhood aspirations and how things changed as his career has progressed over the years.

“I guess something people may not know about me is that I used to play tennis when I was younger. I kind of wanted to be a tennis player when I was younger as well, but chose the path of cricket that worked out very well” Smith added. The New South Wales player also named his cricketing idol during the chat with the Royals.

“The most inspiring person for me to play cricket when I was younger was Mark Waugh. The way he went about his business was so elegant with everything he did” the Aussie captain highlighted. Australia hasn’t lost a Test series against South Africa ever since and Steve Smith’s men will be hoping to keep intact their winning streak against the Proteas.
