The injury woes of Rising Pune Supergiants continued as one of their star batsman Steve Smith has been ruled out of the IPL following a wrist injury. He is not the first player from the side to have been injured. The string of injuries started with Kevin Pietersen getting injured on the field and being ruled out due an ankle injury. A couple of matches later, Faf du Plessis was ruled out following a finger injury. This was not the end of all, as Mitch Marsh too, had to fly back to Australia last week.
The worst was yet to come when Steve Smith had to bow out of the tournament due a wrist injury. Steve Smith, had been in a phenomenal run in the tournament for an underperforming Rising Pune Supergiants. He got starts on most occasions and was just peaking at the right time when the team needed him. He hit a brilliant century against the Gujarat Lions and followed it up with a swashbuckling 45 off just 23 balls against the Mumbai Indians.
The bad news arrived right after the game against the Mumbai Indians at Pune. “Steve has been struggling with pain in his right wrist for the last week during his stint in the IPL,” Australia’s sports science and sports medicine manager Alex Kountouris said. “We have been working with his IPL franchise Pune to monitor this, and unfortunately it has not resolved. As such, he will return home from India for further assessment and treatment ahead of the tour of the West Indies.”
However the injury is not a very one and this would give some respite to the Australian team and his fans. The Australian team sports medicine manager also said that Smith needs the much needed rest to rehabilitate before the tour to West Indies.
“From the information we have so far, this doesn’t appear to be a serious injury but we are keen to give him the time to recover and rehabilitate before heading to the West Indies at the end of May.”
Rising Pune Supergiants are a struggling side in the IPL and have lost 6 out of their 8 matches. They named Usman Khawaja as a replacement for Faf du Plessis. The replacements for the other 3 injured overseas are yet to be named.
