Arguably one of the most emotional press conferences took place in Sydney when Steve Smith came out to apologize for his actions in Cape Town. The former Australian captain alongside his teammates David Warner and Cameron Bancroft was involved in the infamous ball-tampering scandal at Newlands which sent shockwaves across the cricketing community.
The cameramen did a spectacular job to spot the Yellow sandpaper that Bancroft used and hid inside his pockets to tamper the condition of the ball. After the entire incident was no more a secret to the world, Smith and Bancroft spoke to the press and accepted their mistake. Cricket Australia slapped a one-year ban on Smith and Warner whilst Bancroft was penalized with a 9-month ban.
“I’ve been privileged and honored to represent my country. Cricket has been my life and I hope it can be again. I’m sorry and I’m absolutely devastated. I don’t blame anyone. I’m the captain of the Australian team. It’s on my watch and I take responsibility for what happened,” said an emotional Steve Smith who shed tears profusely while talking to the press.
He’ll be fine, he’ll survive: Peter Smith
His father Peter Smith was alongside his son there and offered his best support when he broke down. A video emerged on the social networking sites where Senior Smith is taking his son’s kitbag into the garage and said Smith will be fine and he’ll survive. Since the ban on his international and domestic appearance is set to last for the next 12 months, until March 2019, he might not use the kit very much for a few months as he’ll try to organize his thoughts.
It has been a very tough week for everyone who’s been a part of Australian cricket set up. Immediately after this acrimonious saga panned out, Australia lost the 3rd Test in a disastrous way and are on the backfoot in the ongoing 4th Test. It has been a very difficult week for the families of these cricketers as well who are trying to offer their best support to the banned cricketers.
