Former Australia skipper Steve Smith is currently serving his 12-month ban imposed on him by the Cricket Australia. Smith was banned by the national board following his involvement in the ball tampering gate during the Cape Town Test against South Africa a couple of months ago. Smith was not the only cricketer to be banned in the infamous scandal. Opening batsman David Warner and new recruit Cameron Bancroft were also handed bans.

While Warner was also banned for a year, Bancroft received a ban of 9 months. The ban saw Steve Smith lose his national captaincy and is hence, not allowed to play in international or state cricket. Also, he is banned from playing the BBL this season.

Now, some good news has finally come his way as he is likely to make a comeback on the cricket field. Steve Smith has been named among the 10 marquee players for the player drafts of the inaugural Global T20 Canada League. It is worth noting that Bancroft and Warner has also earlier announced their comeback plans. While Bancroft has been allowed to play in Western Australia’s Premier Cricket League, Warner is set to return for his Sydney Club side, Randwick Petersham.

Global T20 Canada League promising to be a big affair

Commenting on the Global T20 Canada League, the tournament is set to roll out in June this year. The 10 marquee players at the drafts are – Steve Smith, Chris Lynn, former Pakistani cricketer Shahid Afridi, Sri Lankan veteran Lasith Malinga, South African southpaw David Miller, and the Caribbean stars – Chris Gayle, Andre Russell, Sunil Narine, Darren Sammy, and Dwayne Bravo. The player drafts are likely to take place in the last week of May on either May 26, 30, or 31.

Reportedly, there will be six teams in the competition – Vancouver Knights, Winnipeg Hawks, Montreal Tigers, Edmonton Royals, and Toronto Nationals. The Toronto Nationals will have the first pick at the drafts. The sixth team will be a Caribbean All-Stars side consisting of West Indian domestic players but none of the marquee West Indies players in the draft will be part of that squad. Over 1500 players have applied to be in the drafts for the first season. All the matches will be played at the Maple Leaf Cricket Club in King City, Ontario. The finals will be played on June 15, 2018.
