The domestic season of England is up and running with County Championship matches even as the limited overs tournament is also set to begin on May 17. The star players of the national side will most likely not feature in the competition as England is scheduled to play a five-match ODI series against Australia in June. Middlesex will miss their regular captain Dawid Malan during this period which has prompted them to appoint Steven Finn as the skipper of the team for the whole tournament.

John Simpson will be his deputy as both the experienced players will look to bring glory to the club. While Finn has featured in 49 List-A and 69 One-Day matches, Simpson, the wicketkeeper, has been playing for them continuously ever since making the debut in 2009. Though it is not clear if Malan will miss the whole season, it seems that he will lead the team if available.

Finn delighted to take up the responsibility

Steven Finn was delighted after being appointed the skipper of the Middlesex and hoped that he would be able to take the side forward in the upcoming season in the limited overs format. “I am delighted to have been asked to captain the side in Dawid’s absence. Having played at Middlesex since the age of fifteen I am extremely proud to have been given the opportunity and we can hopefully move the side forward in white ball cricket and achieve success in this year’s competition,” he was quoted as saying by the official website of Middlesex.

Angus Fraser, the Managing Director of Middlesex Cricket, believed that this is the right time for the lanky fast bowler to lead the troops and it will help him grow as a player as well.

“Steven is at the stage in his career where he is very keen to take on greater responsibility and, with the expected absence of Dawid Malan with England, he is highly likely to get the opportunity to guide the club through most of our Royal London One-Day Cup group games. John is in a similar position to Steven and the pair will have the brain and experience of Eoin Morgan to help guide them. These opportunities are great for the development of both players and I look forward to watching them at work,” Fraser added.
