The cricket fans are talking about the young rising star of the Indian cricket. Punjab’s Shubman Gill has been making big news in the recent times. It has often been seen that the players who succeed at the U19 level tend to wither away when they stride in to the ring with the big boys. But this certainly does not seem to be the case with young Gill. Shubman Gill was one of the heroes of the India U19 team which won the ICC U19 World Cup this year.
Gill finished the tournament as the leading run scorer and was rightly awarded the Player of the Tournament. The highlight of his scores was a brilliant century that had come against Pakistan U19 in the semifinals of the competition. Soon after he arrived in India, he found himself in the Punjab side for the Vijay Hazare Trophy.
Shubman Gill, who averages over 100 in the U19 level cricket, scored a brilliant century in the Vijay Hazare Trophy as well. Playing against Karnataka, his ton overshadowed the century scored by KL Rahul from the opposition. Well, things have not been very easy for Gill. The success that he is enjoying as an 18 year old have come as a result of years of hard work.
Play, school, play, repeat!
When he was a four year old, his father started to train him to play the game. In fact, some reports suggest that his father had created a pitch in the his vast farmlands in Punjab so that Shubman could practice whenever he wanted. The routine for young Shubman Gill was monotonous. He would get up early at 3:30 in the morning and get ready for his morning practice session. The practice would go on for two hours.
He would then come back from the practice and attend his school. After the school, he would practice under the supervision of his father. After this, he attended another practice session at a professional academy. After coming back from the academy, he would complete his school assignments and then eat his dinner. Finally, a peaceful sleep is what came his way before he got up early in the morning again for the same series of events.
