Stuart Broad would've preferred Joe Root doing an 'Andrew Flintoff' in Leeds
After scoring the ton, Root intentionally dropped his bat on the turf to celebrate.
England and India recently locked horns in a three-match bilateral ODI series. The Brits won the series 2-1 after losing the first match at Trent Bridge in Nottingham. In the last match at Headingley in Leeds, Eoin Morgan and Co displayed why they are regarded as the top-ranked team in the ODI format. The Poms started the ODI series as the number one ranked team with the Men in Blue at number two.
The hosts lost the first ODI and were in danger of losing their apex ODI ranking. However, they showed grit and determination to win the second match at the iconic Lord’s Cricket Ground in London by 86 runs. The victory also meant that they retained their top ODI rankings irrespective of the nature of the last and decisive match. Nevertheless, the series was still at stake.
Root’s stupendous knock
The Brits carried forward their form in the last match as well and won by eight wickets Joe Root, who has had a tumultuous run in the limited-overs formats, scored his second consecutive century to help his team over the winning line. He came to bat pretty early after the fall of Jonny Bairstow’s wicket. He didn’t blaze away but made sure that the scoreboard kept ticking.
Joe Root eventually scored 100 runs from 120 balls with ten boundaries. After scoring the ton, Root intentionally dropped his bat on the turf to celebrate. Meanwhile, Stuart Broad, England’s fast-bowler, reckons that he should’ve gone for Andrew Flintoff’s approach. In 2002, Flintoff celebrated his team’s win against India at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, running around shirtless at the venue.
Broad took to Twitter and wrote, “RT if you’d have preferred @root66 to whip his shirt off & run round Headingley rather than that ‘bat drop.”
