New Zealand stunned India and the cricketing world with their play in the semi-final at the Old Trafford. Defending 239, their bowlers were spot on from the word go and put the Indian batsmen under pressure. Eventually, the Men in Blue fell short of the target by 18 runs which ended their World Cup dream. While the fans were disappointed with the team’s exit, everyone lauded their efforts during the tourney. India Football captain Sunil Chhetri has also joined the list now by stating that he is proud of the side for the way they played.
India were favourites to win the title even before the tournament started and they played like the champions in the league stage. Virat Kohli‘s men toppled Australia from the top of the points table on the last day of the league matches and ended with 15 points to their name in nine matches. They had lost only to England and never really looked in trouble at any stage.
Many had expected them to roll over New Zealand to book a place in the final. But the Kiwis once again punched above their weight to make it to their second successive World Cup final and will fight it out against England at the Lord’s on Sunday now.
It was a fantastic journey
Sunil Chhetri took time out to console the Indian captain Virat Kohli and stated that the kind of cricket the team played under his leadership has made everyone proud. The football player also expressed his disappointment as the dream couldn’t be achieved but is confident that the cricketers will back at their best soon again.
“This team you’ve led has played the kind of cricket to make all of us proud, @imVkohli. It was a fantastic journey that fell a few yards short, but I’m sure you boys will pick yourselves up soon. Very proud of Team India,” Chhetri’s tweet read.

While the Indian team is now expected to take a break for a few days, the players will be soon gearing up for West Indies tour. Both the teams will fight it out in three T20Is, as many ODI and a couple of Test matches from August 3 to September 3.
