The ongoing Test series between England and India has been already decided with the hosts taking an unassailable lead of 3-1 with a win in Southampton. The final game of the series will be a dead rubber and the result of the game won’t affect much. But both the teams are looking forward to the game to end the series on a high. Sunil Gavaskar also has a compelling reason to be excited for the last Test match which will be played in London.
The series has proved to be tough for the batsmen from both the sides. Though England’s lower-order batters have hurt the visitors a lot with their key contributions. The likes of Sam Curran, Chris Woakes and Moeen Ali have won the Man of the Match awards in the winning cause this series which proves that the all-rounders have made the difference.
What are the reasons?
Alastair Cook has decided to hang his boots after the final Test which has increased the stakes suddenly. England will be itching to give one of their best players a winning farewell and Sunil Gavaskar is thrilled to watch the master at work for one final time. Also, consistent failures of the Indian openers has opened up a chance of Prithvi Shaw making a debut at the Kennington Oval and the former Indian cricketer is all geared up to watch the 18-year-old kid.
“The Oval Test will be the last Test for Alastair Cook who has had a tremendous career for England and it could also be the start of a Test career for young Prithvi Shaw and that’s another compelling reason to look forward to the game,” he wrote in his column for the Times of India on Thursday.
The captain Virat Kohli and coach Ravi Shastri have already cleared that they will be playing the dead rubber with the same intensity in order to make it 3-2 in the series.
