Former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar looked mighty impressed with the way youngsters Jasprit Bumrah and Yuzvendra Chahal performed in the New Zealand series. In the final T20I, in particular, these two bowlers bowled exceptionally well under pressure. While Chahal conceded only 8 runs in his two overs, Bumrah bagged 2 wickets for 9 runs in his quota of 2 overs.
Commenting on the effort, Gavaskar heaped praises on the two cricketers. As per the recent quotes in NDTV, Sunil Gavaskar noted that both Bumrah and Chahal used their IPL experience to pull off a sensational effort. He added that the effort speaks volumes about their characters and the strong heart that they have.
“They were fantastic. They have been absolutely terrific. They had brought all their IPL experience into play, they know exactly where to bowl, to which batsman what line to bowl, what deliveries to bowl and yes, there will be that odd over when they will go for runs but they come so strongly. That tells you about their (Bumrah and Chahal) big heart as well. Take punishment and then to come back and bowl deadly overs,” quoted Sunil Gavaskar.
Ready for the big stage
Speaking further on the same note, Sunil Gavaskar went on to quote that the two youngsters are now ready for the Test cricket. He feels that Bumrah, in particular, could be a lethal option on overseas tours. With the South Africa tour coming up, it will be interesting to see if the selectors also think on the same lines as the former Indian captain. Speaking about Chahal, Gavaskar cited that he is not afraid to toss the ball up. This is a very handy trait to possess as a spinner and that makes him an exciting prospect for Test cricket.
“Both these bowlers have been quite outstanding and I do believe that the way they are bowling they should also be considered for the red ball format which is the Test format. Particularly, I think both of them. Bumrah for example, you know in South Africa, Australia and England he will be quite a handful with the pace and with the accuracy that he has and Chahal as well, the way he has been tossing the ball up to the odd batsman, getting the ball to turn and grip, I think both of them are ready for red ball cricket,” Gavaskar conceded.
