Former Indian captain and legendary batsman Sunil Gavaskar will have the dubious honor of ringing the bell to begin the play between India and England at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. This bell had previously been installed recently and had been rung to signify the start of play between India and New Zealand a few months previously.
Gavaskar had been one of the most important people connected to Indian cricket and will be definitely the best person to do it in the grand scheme of things. Sourav Ganguly, the former Indian skipper and now the president of the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) also stated that it was indeed an honor to have Gavaskar ring the bell.
“Sunil Gavaskar will be here on Sunday and we will request him to do this honor. The practice of ringing the bell will continue in all international matches here,” he added.
Gavaskar had gone on to add that he wanted Virat Kohli to ring the bell. However, with Virat being a playing member of the side, it was quite clear that the tradition of putting the spotlight on the legends is something that they are trying to do at the moment.
“We also had the plan to ask Virat Kohli to do this, but as he is a playing member (and captain also) of the team, it would be unwise for him to signal for the start of the game,” he concluded.
India comes into the third and final ODI given the fact that they are already leading the series 2-0. While this would be a rather inconsequential series when it comes to the grand scheme of things, the Indians will certainly be hoping to grab a win to ensure that they build confidence ahead of the Champions Trophy.
