Super Smash 2018-19: Northern Knights' batsman Daryl Mitchell given out obstructing the field
Quite clearly, Mitchell had nobody to blame for this embarrassing way of getting out.
The Northern Knights’ batsman, Daryl Mitchell, who came in at number four with Knights struggling at 16 for the loss of two wickets was given out obstructing the field in the Super Smash clash against Canterbury at Seddon Park, Hamilton. On the fifth bowl of the fifth over of the innings, Canterbury’s bowler Kyle Jamieson bowled a cutter outside the off stump which was pushed back by the 27-year-old batsman towards the bowler. Jamieson picked up the ball and had a shot at the stumps in an attempt to run the batsman out.
But, Knights’ batsman, to everyone’s shock, deliberately knocked the ball away with his feet which is truly against the laws. Though the ball was nowhere close to hitting the stumps still it is unlawful to attempt such a thing. So, the fielding team appealed for obstructing the field against the batsman to which the two on-field umpires responded by sending the decision upstairs to the third umpire after having a discussion.
The decision from the third umpire went in the favour of the fielding side as he found sufficient evidence to rule the batsman out. Quite clearly, Mitchell had nobody to blame for this embarrassing way of getting out but himself as he was the one who decided to come in the way of the throw deliberately.

The Knights are playing Canterbury in the 18th match of the New Zealand’s domestic T20 competition Super Smash. The match was reduced to 16 overs a side due to rain interruption. Currently, Dean Brownlie-skippered Northern Knights are the table toppers with 20 points, winning five out of six games so far.
Canterbury, on the other hand, are currently sitting at the bottom of the table with 4 points from a single win out of five matches played in the tournament so far. This was the must-win game for Cole McConchie’s side as they wanted to keep their title hopes alive.
