Axar Patel was ruled out of the Test series against the Proteas along with senior left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja. Jayant Yadav who played the Mumbai Test against New Zealand was thus included as a backup for Ravichandran Ashwin.
There have been no updates on Axar’s fitness yet and it remains to be seen if he makes it to the squad for the South Africa ODIs. The team for the highly anticipated series is expected to be announced soon as the selectors are waiting for the fitness update of Rohit Sharma who had to deal with a hamstring injury ahead of the Test series against the Proteas.
Yuzvendra Chahal on the other hand has also been struggling a tad bit to find his place in the Indian setup. The spinner did not have a pleasant outing in the first half of the IPL 2021. However, he turned the tables around in the UAE leg of the tournament.
Chahal and Kuldeep were a part of the team India squad for the tour of Sri Lanka which was held earlier this year. The former also featured in the third T20I against the Kiwis at home as Ashwin was rested for the match. He picked up the wicket of Martin Guptill wherein he did a decent job with the ball conceding 26 runs from his four overs.
He also looked in fine touch in the recently concluded Vijay Hazare Trophy, picking up 14 wickets in five matches for Haryana. Thus it will be intriguing to watch if he makes the cut for the South Africa ODIs.
