Southpaw Suresh Raina has attained the distinction of perhaps being the most important left-handed batsman in the Indian side. Therefore, it is a notch higher than shocking when Raina revealed that he once had the uneasy thought of ending his life. Although Raina has been the beneficiary of many a fan over the years, things haven’t always been hunky-dory for him, especially during his childhood days.

Speaking to a plethora of media sources, Raina illustrated several incidents that led to an uneasy childhood. Raina shared an incident where he was travelling in a train at the age of 13 and felt something heavy on his shoulders while he was asleep. He realized his hands were tied and there was a big kid on his chest, who started peeing on his face. Raina somehow pushed the boy off the train to get rid of him.

Another incident saw Raina beaten to the pulp with hockey sticks during his stay at the sports hostel. So much was the pain that was inflicted that Raina almost went into coma. Unable to cope with the pressure and contemplating a decision to take his own life, Raina quit the sports hostel. However, upon the conviction and advice of his older brother, Raina rejoined the sports hostel just two months after walking out.

At the moment, the 29-year old now finds himself an invaluable cog in the Indian T20 side. He was also named as the captain for newly formed IPL franchise the Gujarat Lions. It now seems as though the tough times for Raina have bid their farewell.
