Suresh Raina has been one of India’s most consistent batsmen in the middle-order, especially limited-overs cricket. He made his debut for India in a One Day International back on July 30, 2015, when the national team locked horns with Sri Lanka in Dambulla. He has played 226 ODIs thus far in which he has scored 5615 runs at an average of 35.31 to go with five centuries.
The 31-year old made his Test debut in 2010 against the Lankans and immediately made an impact with his maiden century in red-ball cricket. However, he faded away from the longest format and last represented them in 2015 during India’s tour of Australia. The southpaw has scored 768 runs in 18 Tests at an average of 36.48. Nevertheless, he kept on playing coloured-clothing cricket.
Raina’s stop-start career
To add to his agony, he went out of contention for selection even in ODIs and T20Is. Last year, he strained with the willow during Uttar Pradesh’s stint in the Ranji Trophy. But he made a strong statement with a century in the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 tournament. He was immediately drafted into the T20 squad for India’s tour of South Africa earlier this year. Raina also played the Nidahas Trophy in Sri Lanka.
Recently, he made a comeback into the ODI team after a gap of three years. He scored 46 runs at Lord’s, however, faltered at Headingley in Leeds. India’s next limited-overs assignment will be the Asia Cup and it will be interesting to see if he gets an opportunity in the team or not. Recently, the cricketer went 13 years down the memory lane and reminisced the time when he made his debut.
He took to Twitter and wrote, “That dream & passion of playing for my country had realised exactly 13 years ago today! 13 years have been full of highs & lows but the moment I am on field to represent nation nothing else matters but my! I thank all of you wholeheartedly to make this journey so wonderful!”
