Surrey confirms Virat Kohli's signing to play County Championship
"We are thrilled to have signed the biggest name in world cricket for the month of June," Alec Stewart said.
Surrey Cricket Club has confirmed the signing of Virat Kohli for the month of June in the ongoing County Championship. This confirms that the Indian skipper will also miss the one-off historic Test match against Afghanistan which is scheduled to be played on June 14. Kohli’s record has been very poor in England and he badly wants to improve in that aspect in the upcoming tour. However, he expressed his excitement to feature in the County and thanked Alec Stewart, the Director of Surrey, for giving him the opportunity.
Kohli will play 3 four-day matches during his county stint for Surrey against Hampshire, Somerset and Yorkshire to get himself going against England. India’s tour is set to commence on July 1 with three-match T20 International series which will be followed by ODIs and then the five-match Test series. It is also possible that he might play the One-Day Cup as well as Surrey will clash against Kent, Middlesex and Glamorgan in the limited overs format.
Delighted Kohli
Virat Kohli was delighted to play in County for the first time and was excited to join the team soon. “It has long been an ambition of mine to play county cricket and I am thankful to Alec Stewart and Surrey for allowing me the opportunity to join them during their 2018 season. I can’t wait to get to the Kia Oval,” he was quoted as saying by kiaoval.com. Even Stewart welcomed him to the club and was happy to sign one of the biggest names in world cricket.
“We are thrilled to have signed the biggest name in world cricket for the month of June. Playing and training alongside Virat will be a massive benefit for our players who will have the opportunity to learn so much from him. At a time when there is much discussion around the future of county cricket, the arrival of Virat should give our domestic game a massive boost and positive exposure around the cricketing world which in turn can benefit every county,” he said.
