Suryakumar Yadav won the Player of the Match award in a local tournament for scoring a murderous 259 off just 152 deliveries for Parsee Gymkhana versus the Payyade Sports Club. And after the match, the right-handed batter handed over his award to the groundsman of the venue.
Yadav revealed that the effort that the groundsmen put in is not acknowledged enough. Adding that the groundsmen are the first to arrive at the ground and prepare the pitch, Yadav said that when he started playing cricket, he used to roll the pitch with the groundsmen.
“I think that’s one thing we always neglect as cricketers. The effort groundsmen make is not spoken much about. They are the first ones to be on the ground. In the morning they are here by 6:30 AM. They will prepare the pitch, clear dew. These things are close to my heart because the time I started to play cricket, I remember whenever I had to bat at the nets, I used to roll the pitch along with groundsmen and a few of my friends,” said Suryakumar Yadav as quoted by The Indian Express.
No one says thank you to the groundsmen: Suryakumar Yadav
Suryakumar Yadav also added that the effort from the groundsmen goes unnoticed and everybody praises only the players for their performances. Adding that every cricketer should remember the contribution made by the groundsmen for the sport of cricket, Yadav concluded by stating that they deserve a lot of credit for the work they do.
“They go unnoticed. We score, everyone praises us, we see our name in papers but sadly no one says thank you for their (groundsmen) effort. I feel each player should remember their contribution towards their game. They make pitches for us, they ensure we get a good track to uplift our career. They deserve a lot of credit,” concluded Suryakumar Yadav.
