Sydney Thunder spinner, Arjun Nair cleared of an illegal action
Nair's action was "markedly different" by the officials.
New South Whales spinner, Arjun Nair’s action was approved by Cricket Australia on Friday. The young off-spinner was suspended for illegal bowling action during the last edition of the Big Bash League (BBL). Arjun was prohibited from bowling in domestic cricket as he failed the bowling test that was conducted once his action was reported by match officials after the BBL game against Hobart Hurricanes on December 30.
Amid the test led at the National Cricket Center in Brisbane, Nair knocked down some pins with a “markedly different” activity which was a rupture of Cricket Australia’s convention deserving of a ban of no less than 90 days. Since his ban, the young lad has worked with Cricket NSW pathways coach Anthony Clark and Beau Casson to rectify his action.
It was a big blow
After being cleared Nair said that it was a big blow and he was disappointed. It didn’t just have an impact on him but everyone around him, his family was disappointed.
“It was obviously a big blow. I was very disappointed and it took me quite a while to get my head around it. Not just for me, but it was really hard for my family. My Dad is very involved with my cricket so I think he was more affected by it than I was. I worked with him on bowling a lot as well,” he said.
The 20-year-old’s father also helped him work on the action after his regular training sessions with the NSW coach.
“After I’d finished bowling with Beau and Anthony, I went with my Dad and did some extras. I was always confident that I’d be able to fix it and return. I had a lot of support from NSW teammates and the Sydney Thunder,” Nair was quoted by cricket.com.au.
“My coaches and I sat down and looked at my footage and the thing I noticed was that I didn’t use much of my lower body. So I had to engage my legs more in my action. That was the key. I’ve been looking at my arm path as well – just little things, but they made a big difference to my action. For me, the challenge is now to maintain it. You see a lot of bowlers who have been in this position and had a problem, they come back and get reported again. I have to make sure I don’t lapse and keep in the back of my mind that I have to keep being consistent,” the young offie added.
