Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2017: Day 5 Round Up
Another eventful day ended as the 5th day of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy saw the completion of 10 more matches. The day began with the clash between Goa and Kerala where Kerala thrashed the unfancied Goa by 9 wickets. Chasing a paltry 87 to win, Kerala chased down the target within the 8th over. Basil Thampi was the wrecker-in-chief for Kerala as he finished with impressive figures of 3/19.
While Rajasthan defeated Chhattisgarh by 25 runs in the 2nd encounter of the day, Delhi steamrolled Services by 6 wickets. Aniket Chaudhary was the leading wicket-taker for Rajasthan as Chhattisgarh were bundled out for 136, chasing a target of 162 runs. Out of favour Indian opener, Shikhar Dhawan struck a brilliant 82 of 47 deliveries to help Delhi chase down the modest target set by Services.
In the Maharashtra derby, Mumbai defeated Maharashtra by 6 wickets to remain unbeaten in the tournament. Captain Aditya Tare struck a composed 71 to ensure Mumbai chased down the competitive target set by Maharashtra with utmost ease. Rohan Raje bagged 3 wickets for 21 runs in his 4 overs. Jammu and Kashmir won their 2nd encounter of the tournament by defeating Haryana by 4 runs in a nail-biting thriller.
While Baroda defeated Saurashtra by 3 wickets, Karnataka edged past Hyderabad by 14 runs. All-rounder Irfan Pathan struck a match-winning 65 of 31 deliveries to ensure Baroda chased down the target of 161 in the 19th over. Left-arm seamer Srinath Arvind was instrumental in Karnataka’s 14 runs victory as he finished with impressive figures of 3/25. Jagadish Suchit supported him well who also chipped in with a couple of wickets.

After a thrashing in the opening encounter, Tamil Nadu has come back strongly and have won three back to back matches. In today’s encounter, they defeated Andhra Pradesh by 37 runs courtesy an impressive bowling performance from the bowlers. Vijay Shankar’s brilliant knock of 69 helped Tamil Nadu post 179 after batting first.
In the last two matches of the day, Railways thrashed Uttar Pradesh by 90 runs as they were bundled out for a meagre 58 chasing a target of 149. Four bowlers bagged a couple of wickets each to hand Uttar Pradesh a demoralising victory. Punjab defeated Himachal Pradesh in the final match of the day by 23 runs.
Manan Vohra struck a composed 60 of 50 deliveries to take Punjab past the 150 mark. Himachal Pradesh began quickly but kept losing wickets regularly in the finishing stages to hand Punjab a comprehensive victory.
