Bangladesh Premier League franchise Sylhet Sixers has announced their arrival at an event, on Sunday. The franchise launched their logo at an event in Sylhet. The team was in the news regarding confusion over its name. It was previously reported that the team will don the name- Sylhet Super Sixers but it has been clarified that they will go with ‘Sylhet Sixers’.
The officials informed that they had initially come up with the name as ‘Surma Sixers’ but due to the guidelines set by the BPL GC regarding a team’s title, they had to cut it off. Previously, Sylhet participated in the BPL, with the name Sylhet Royals, before they were suspended last season.
Roping in big names
The BPL governing council had given Sylhet the luxury of straight away picking three local players from the available list in order to match the other six teams of the tournament in the players’ draft.
The team has roped in all-rounder Nasir Hossain, wicket-keeper batsman Nurul Hasan and left-arm spinner Taijul Islam. Ex Bangladesh batsman Faruque Ahmed has been named the team director and Zahid Ehsan will represent as the head coach while former Bangladesh fast bowler Hasibul Hossain has been named as the team manager.
BPL-Global T20 clash
There were talks about Pakistan players pulling out of BPL due to its clash with South Africa’s inaugural edition of Global T20 League. “We haven’t heard about anything from the Pakistan players as yet, officially or unofficially,” Ismail-Haider Mallick, secretary of the BCB governing council, told ESPNcricinfo. “But if it happens then it will be a big loss for the players as BPL is one of the most competitive leagues in the world. But we are not too worried about the situation as we have a lot of foreign players who can replace missing Pakistan players.”
