Sylhet Superstars to change team name ahead of the BPL season 5

The fifth season of the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) is all set to begin from the 4th of November and will be played until the end of December where eight teams will battle it out for the prestigious trophy around the period of 60 days. Dhaka Dynamites will kick off BPL with a home again at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium with the final game being played at Mirpur in Dhaka on the 23rd of December.

This season will also see the reintroduction of the team based from Sylhet, named as the Surma Sixers. The team will make its first appearance after the second season with a new ownership and management. Reports confirmed through the franchise sources that the team is going to shape in a new name; it is highly likely the team would appear in the name ‘Sylhet Shurma Sixes’. The reason for the name being Shurma is the name ‘Shurma’ commemorates the famous river Shurma flowing across Sylhet adding the rich value of history to the team.

The reason behind the name change:

Shafiqul Islam, the coordinator of Sylhet franchise, said, “We are thinking of changing the name of Sylhet Superstar to Shurma Sixes to memorialise the culture and history.” The franchise was earlier named as the Sylhet Royals before they got a rename to Sylhet Superstars. The number of teams in this year’s competition has increased to eight in the fifth edition of the tournament.

The other seven teams who will take part in the fifth edition of the tournament would be Barisal Bulls, Chittagong Vikings, Comilla Victorians, Dhaka Dynamites, Khulna Titans, Rajshahi Kings, Rangpur Riders.

Dhaka Dynamites enter the tournament as the defending champions after they defeated the Rajshahi Kings in the 2016 edition of the tournament, by a margin of 56 runs. There might be a slight change in the rule this year around, with reports suggesting that the franchises would be allowed to field five foreign players, with the earlier rule allowing only four players.
