T20 Blast 2018, Day 26: Round-up
Durham's Liam Trevaskis defended 6 runs in the last over by picking 3 wickets to lead his team to an unlikely victory.
Total two games, one each from either group, were played on the 26th day of the Vitality T20 Blast. In the first encounter of the day, Lancashire faced Durham at Old Trafford in Manchester. It was Glamorgan versus Essex in the South group clash which was played at Sophia Gardens in Cardiff.
Both these games were won by the sides batting first and went right down the wire. Worcestershire continues to top the points table in the North group while Durham moved up to the second position. In the South group, Glamorgan is now second on the points table courtesy a better net run rate. Here is how things progressed in both these matches:
Lancashire vs Durham – North Group
Having won the toss, Durham’s skipper Tom Latham decided to bat first. But he failed to get amongst the runs as he was dismissed after scoring only 14 runs. Although Graham Clark and Paul Collingwood got off to good starts, they failed to capitalise. Will Smith, who batted at No 5 scored 37 off 32 as Durham put on 154 runs on the board for the loss of 7 wickets after 20 overs.
Although Lancashire lost its opener, K Brown, early, Alex Davies and A Lilley stitched a good partnership together. They added 72 runs for the second wicket. While Alex scored 53, Lilley scored 28. Lancashire were cruising along quite comfortably and was 114/3 after 13.5 overs.
However, they kept losing wickets regularly after the initial flourish. But still, the game was under their control as they needed just 6 runs off the final over. But, Liam Trevaskis picked 3 wickets and conceded just one run to sensationally win the game for his team.
Brief Scores:
Durham: 154/7 in 20 overs (Will Smith 37*, Graham Clark 29, Zahir Khan 2/19)
Lancashire: 150/9 in 20 overs (Alex Davies 53, A Lilley 28, Liam Trevaskis 4/16)
Result: Durham won by 4 runs.
Glamorgan vs Essex – South Group
This was a high scoring game. Glamorgan batted first and put up a massive total of 198 runs on the board for the loss of 7 wickets. Skipper Colin Ingram was the star with the bat as he scored 89 off just 47 balls. Other than Ingram, only one batsman in the top 6 managed to reach the double figures as Kiran Carlson scored 11. But Graham Wagg, with 28-ball-53, and R Smith, with 9-ball-22, helped the team post a massive total.
Essex opener Varun Chopra provided the team with a good start. He scored 54 off 41 balls while his skipper Ryan ten Doeschate scored 28 off 21 balls to keep the scoreboard ticking. But they were behind the required run-rate which left them to score 24 runs off the last over with Ravi Bopara in the middle. He scored 16 runs off the first four balls and Essex required another 8 off the last two balls. He could only score 1 run off those two balls as his team fell short by just 6 runs of the target.
Brief Scores:
Glamorgan: 198/7 in 20 overs (Colin Ingram 89, G Wagg 53*, Matthew Quinn 3/61)
Essex: 192/6 in 20 overs (V Chopra 54, Ravi Bopara 45*, Timm van der Gugten 2/33)
Result: Glamorgan won by 6 runs.
