T20 World Cup 2020 in October likely to go ahead as per schedule, confirms ICC

ICC men’s T20 World Cup is scheduled to have its latest edition this year. The tournament will be played between October 18 and November 15. Last month, Australia hosted the women’s edition of the tournament and it turned out to be quite successful. But with the COVID-19 leading to the cancellation of many cricket tournaments across the globe, the World event has also come to doubt.

The outbreak of coronavirus has put certain doubts over the organising of the tournament. The tournament will be played in Australia and the country has been one of the most affected ones. The Australian government has said that the global pandemic could go on for six months and there is no surety on how and when the things will finally become normal.

ICC to monitor situation in Australia before taking a call

Recently, ICC also released a statement on this issue. In the statement, they stated that the tournament is currently likely to go ahead as scheduled. They also said the local organising committee for the tournament will be taking all things into consideration and will be monitoring the situation closely before making a final decision. However, ICC also stated that as of now, the tournament will be played as planned.

“In response to the ongoing coronavirus crisis, the ICC T20 World Cup 2020 Local Organising Committee is monitoring the situation closely with relevant authorities and will continue to do so,” ICC had said in the statement. “The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup is scheduled to take place from 18 October – 15 November 2020 in seven venues across Australia. We are planning for the event to go ahead as scheduled,” ICC further stated.

If the situation doesn’t get better across the world or in Australia, the tournament could be cancelled altogether. Recently, there were rumours that ICC is planning to reschedule the tournament for 2022. Next year, India will be hosting another edition of the men’s T20 world cup. Hence, it can be easily predicted that if ICC wants to reschedule the tournament, 2021 won’t be the year for Australia.

At the moment, there have been 5788 people affected by COVID-19 in Australia. So far, 39 people have died in the country and the government along with the healthcare department is trying its best to keep the number under check.
