The second semi-final between Pakistan and Australia at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium turned out to be an absolute humdinger. On Thursday, November 11, both teams fought tooth and nail to overpower each other. In the end, it was the Aaron Finch-led Aussies, who won by five wickets with six balls left. Pakistan won five games in a row in the Super 12, but failed to win the knockout game.

Fakhar, Rizwan guide Pakistan

After being put in to bat first, Pakistan got off to a decent start, scoring 47 runs in the powerplay. Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan made sure that the Aussies didn’t make early breakthroughs. The duo carried on and stitched together a 71-run stand for the first wicket off 10 overs. Adam Zampa struck first blood, getting rid of Babar, who made 39 runs off 34 balls with five fours.

Rizwan, in the meantime, raced away to yet to another fifty, this time off 41 balls. Fakhar Zaman has strained for form in the mega event, but he found some momentum after hitting a four through third man. Rizwan played a crucial knock of 67 off 52 before Mitchell Starc got rid of him. Fakhar, however, stayed not out on 55 off 32 with three fours and four sixes, taking Pakistan to 176.

Wade, Stoinis hold nerve

Shaheen Shah Afridi removed Aaron Finch as Pakistan started off in a stupendous manner. But David Warner and Mitchell Marsh made sure that Australia scored 52 runs in the powerplay. The duo put on 51 runs before Shadab Khan pinned Marsh, who made a 22-ball 28. Steve Smith couldn’t last long as he became Shadab’s second victim. Warner, at the other end, kept going for the big strokes.

Shadab inflicted the body blow as he nipped out Warner, who scored a 30-ball 49 with three fours and as many sixes. In his next over, the leggie picked up his fourth wicket in the form of Glenn Maxwell. Marcus Stoinis stayed unbeaten on 40 off 31 with two fours and as many sixes. However, it was Matthew Wade, who scored a 17-ball 41, including three sixes off Afridi, to take Australia home.
