West Indies’ campaign in the T20 World 2021 was nothing but horrendous. Stepping into the competition as defending champions, the Caribbean side was expected to trouble the best of the teams in the competition. However, nothing as such could happen. The two-time champions failed to perform as a unit and suffered one loss after another. In fact, they lost four of their five league-stage games, getting knocked out of the semi-final race.
The Caribbean side faced Australia in their last fixture at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi. Just like the previous matches, West Indies couldn’t win this fixture as well. They apparently suffered an eight-wicket defeat. Although West Indies wouldn’t be happy by the way the game panned out, all-rounder Andre Russell would be pretty pleased with his brief cameo.
Andre Russell unleashes a monster in Abu Dhabi
After a string of low scores, the dasher played some fine shots as West Indies got a fiery finish. He, in total, scored 18 runs in seven balls with the help of a couple of sixes and a four. Notably, one of his sixes covered a distance of a whopping 111 meter, the biggest six in the competition.
It was the penultimate over of West Indies’ innings and none other than Mitchell Starc was operating with the ball. Surprisingly, the speedster went with a length delivery and Russell accepted the offer with both hands. The dasher unleashed a massive big shot as the ball sailed towards the deep mid-wicket region.
Russell hit another six in the last ball as West Indies finished at 157/7 in their allotted 20 overs. Australia’s chase went pretty smooth as David Warner and Mitchell Marsh scored fiery half-centuries. The former scored an unbeaten 89 as Australia crossed the line in 16.1 overs, winning by eight wickets.
West Indies skipper Kieron Pollard, after the loss, accepted that his team wasn’t up to the mark in the entire competition. “I think overall has been a disappointing campaign. The batting has lived up to expectations, bowling has been decent. We could have done better with the fielding as well. Overall we weren’t good enough,” Pollard said after the conclusion of the contest.
