T20 World Cup 2021: Glenn Phillips runs into advertisement board while fielding, survives injury scare
The gaffe could have been nasty for Glenn Phillips.
New Zealand are taking on England in the first semi-final of the T20 World Cup 2021 at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi. Both teams have been impressive in this competition so far and it would be interesting to see which side qualifies for the final clash. For the unversed, the coin landed in New Zealand’s favour and Kane Williamson didn’t had any hesitation in fielding first.
The contest was pretty tight in the initial overs as the English side didn’t lose a lot of wickets but couldn’t score freely either. However, the scoring rate enhanced a bit after Dawid Malan’s arrival. The southpaw played some delightful shots and one of his hits almost gave the Kiwis an injury scare. It was the last ball of the 10th over and pacer Jimmy Neesham was operating with the ball.

It was a length ball just outside off and Malan’s eyes lit after seeing the width. He executed a delightful cover drive and the ball was racing towards the deep extra cover boundary. In order to minimize the runs, Glenn Phillips sprinted to stop the ball but couldn’t do so. While the dasher couldn’t stop the ball, he could have hurt the Kiwi side more.
Phillips couldn’t control his follow-through and went onto hit the advertisement board. The 24-year-old ran so hard that he even crossed the barrier. While the gaffe could have been ugly, Phillips, fortunately for New Zealand, didn’t suffer any injury. He, in fact, took the field quickly and even came onto bowl.
Speaking of the game, New Zealand have scores to settle as they lost the highly-controversial 2019 World Cup final against the Three Lions. Although England are touted as favourites for this fixture, the Kiwis have a knack of thriving in ICC events. Hence, taking them lightly won’t be wise for England. Skipper Eoin Morgan asserted the same during the toss.
“We can’t take New Zealand lightly at all, they’ve been playing semi-finals and finals for a lot longer than we have, so we’ll have to play out of our skins to beat them. Looking forward to a great contest today,” the southpaw had said.
