Australia, on Thursday, won their second game in the Super 12 of the 2021 T20 World Cup. The Kangaroos had a tough time in the West Indies and Bangladesh, but have found their rhythm in the mega event. On October 28, Aaron Finch’s men defeated Sri Lanka by seven wickets at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. With the defeat, Lanka’s four-match winning streak came to an end.
Asalanka, Perera guide Lanka
After being put in to bat first, the Lankans racked up 154 for the loss of six wickets. Pat Cummins got rid of Pathum Nissanka early, but Kusal Perera and Charith Asalanka steadied the ship. They scored 35 runs each and stitched together a partnership of 63 runs for the second wicket. The Lankans lost their way a bit from there on. Leg-spinner Adam Zampa got rid of Asalanka to trigger a mini-collapse.
From 78 for one, the Lankans slumped to 94 for five in a space of 17 balls. However, Bhanuka Rajapaksha put his head down and stayed unbeaten on a 26-ball 33, laced with four fours and a six. Dasun Shanaka had a tough time in the middle after managing only 12 runs at a strike-rate of 63.15 before Cummins picked his scalp. Zampa, Cummins and Mitchell Starc got two wickets apiece.
Warner gets back to form
The Aussies got off to a rollicking start to their run-chase as they scored 63 runs in the powerplay. David Warner and Aaron Finch put on 70 runs for the opening wicket off 41 balls to put the Aussies on the driver’s seat. Finch made 37 off 23 with five fours and two sixes before Wanindu Hasaranga rattled his woodwork. In his next over, Hasaranga sent back Glenn Maxwell cheaply as well.
But Warner and Steve Smith got the innings back on track with a 50-run stand. Warner, who was searching for form prior to the game, racked up a half-century off 31 balls. He went on to score 65 off 42, decorated with 10 fours. Shanaka got rid of him, but by then, Australia were already on the driver’s seat. Smith’s 28 and Marcus Stoinis’ seven-ball 16 helped the Aussies win with three overs to spare.
