The Indian batters couldn't pose any threat to the in-form Black Caps' bowlers.
New Zealand, led by Kane Williamson, have secured their maiden win in the Super 12 of the T20 World Cup 2021. On Sunday, October 31, they defeated India by eight wickets at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. As far as Virat Kohli and Co. are concerned, they need to win all three games from here on to have any chance of qualifying for the semi-final of the mega event.
Boult, Sodhi take India down
After winning the toss and electing to field first, New Zealand performed excellently as they restricted the Men in Blue to a mere 110 for the loss of seven wickets. Trent Boult got rid of Ishan Kishan, who opened the batting, to strike first blood. The tactic to send Rohit Sharma at No.3 failed as the right-hander scored a run-a-ball 14 before leg-spinner Ish Sodhi accounted for his wicket.
Sodhi also got rid of Indian skipper Virat Kohli in the 11th over. KL Rahul also flattered to deceive. Hardik Pandya scored 23 runs, but got out in the quest to up the ante. In the end, it was Ravindra Jadeja’s unbeaten 19-ball 26 that took India past the 100-run mark. Sodhi was the standout Kiwi bowler, having picked up three wickets. Sodhi got two wickets and bowled at an economy of 4.25.
Daryl Mitchell piles more misery for India
India needed early wickets to have any chance of making a comeback in the game. But they didn’t get it as Martin Guptill and Daryl Mitchell stitched together a 24-run stand off 22 balls. Guptill scored 20 off 17 with three fours before Jasprit Bumrah picked his wicket up. The Black Caps went on to score 44 runs in the powerplay and didn’t allow India to get a foothold back into the game.
Mitchell looked at his very best from the outset as he scored 49 runs off 34 balls with the help of four fours and three sixes. He became Bumrah’s second victim after he unsuccessfully tried to clear the long-on fielder. Williamson, at the other end, didn’t show any nerves and stayed unbeaten on 33 off 31 balls. In the end, the Kiwis won the game with as many as 33 balls to spare.
