England have continued their dominating run in the 2021 edition of the T20 World Cup in the UAE. The Eoin Morgan-led unit have won four matches and have almost qualified for the semi-final of the mega event. On Monday, November 1, the Brits defeated Sri Lanka by 26 runs at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium. The Lankans have now lost three games in a row and their campaign is in the shambles.
Jos Buttler shows his class yet again
After electing to field first, the Lankans got the Brits by the scruff of their necks. England could only manage 36 runs in the powerplay and lost three wickets. Wanindu Hasaranga struck first blood, getting rid of Jason Roy and Jonny Bairstow, who both couldn’t get into double digits. Dushmantha Chameera castled Dawid Malan and the Three Lions found themselves in all sorts of trouble.
But from there on, the Brits made a turnaround. Jos Buttler and Eoin Morgan stitched together a 112-run stand for the fourth wicket. Buttler carried on from where he left off against Australia. The right-hander hammered his way to an unbeaten 67-ball 101, laced with six fours and as many sixes. Morgan got out to Hasaranga, but only after scoring 40 and helping his team post 163 on the board.
England bowlers show their class
The Lankans got off to a poor start in their run-chase. Pathum Nissanka got run out as the Islanders lost a wicket in the very first over of their innings. Charith Asalanka hit three fours and a six in his 16-ball 21 before Adil Rashid accounted for his wicket. Soon after Kusal Perera bite the dust as well. Avishka Fernando couldn’t survive the heat and fell prey to veteran fast bowler Chris Jordan.
The Lankans lost half their side with their score at 76 in 10.5 overs. Thereafter, Dasun Shanaka and Hasaranga put on 53 runs for the sixth wicket off six overs. Hasaranga scored 34 before leg-spinner Liam Livingstone accounted for his wicket. Shanaka scored 26 before Buttler ran him out. From there on, Lanka lost quite a bit of momentum and they got bowled out for 137 in 19 overs..
