With the victory, the Kiwis, led by Kane Williamson, stayed at third in the points table with a net run rate of 0.816. Martin Guptill powers the Kiwis
After being put in to bat first, the Black Caps did an excellent job as they scored 172 for the loss of five wickets. Daryl Mitchell and skipper Williamson couldn’t score big and got out to Safyaan Sharif. Devon Conway also flattered to deceive after Mark Watt accounted for his wicket. However, Martin Guptill and Glenn Phillips stitched together a 105-run stand for the fourth wicket to bring their team back on track.
Guptill looked at his fluent best as he racked up his half-century off 35 balls. Phillips, at the other end, looked out of sorts. He scored 33 at under a run-a-ball before Brad Wheal dismissed him. Guptill went on to complete 3,000 T20I runs, the second batter to do so after India’s Virat Kohli. He went on to score a 56-ball 93, laced with six fours and seven sixes and guided the Kiwis to a formidable total.
New Zealand romp home
Scotland started their run-chase in a decent manner as Kyle Coetzer hit four fours. But Trent Boult nipped him out in the third over to strike first blood. George Munsey was starting to look ominous, having scored 22 off 18 balls. But Ish Sodhi sent him back in the eighth over. Matthew Cross also promised a lot before Tim Southee castled him. In the first 10 overs, Scotland racked up 76 runs.
The onus was then on Richie Berrington and Calum MacLeod to take the innings forward. The latter got out to Boult after scoring only 12. Berrington got into his the 20s before Sodhi induced a false stroke from him. From there on, Michael Leask came out firing on all cylinders and scored an unbeaten 20-ball 42 with three glorious fours and as many sixes. However, his efforts went in vain.
