Defending champions West Indies have officially been knocked out from the semi-final race of the T20 World Cup 2021. It has indeed been a dismal campaign for them as nothing really went in their favour. While their star-studded batting line-up couldn’t live up to the expectations, their bowlers lacked impact. As a result, they suffered a 20-run defeat against the Lankans at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi.
As far as the proceedings of the game are concerned, West Indies followed the tradition and opted to bowl after winning the toss. Sri Lankan batters showcased great intent and went after the bowlers from the outset. Charith Asalanka and Pathum Nissanka scored quick-fire half-centuries as the Lankans posted a massive 189/3 in their allotted 20 overs.
West Indies’ chase wasn’t smooth by any means as their batters disappointed once again. However, young southpaws Nicholas Pooran and Shimron Hetmyer played some fine shots to spice up the contest. While Pooran was dismissed for 46, Hetmyer scored an unbeaten 81. But their efforts weren’t enough as the Caribbean side was restricted to 169/8.
