Pakistan got pushed to No.2 in Group 2 points table after New Zealand beat Afghanistan by eight wickets in Abu Dhabi. However, Babar Azam’s men got back their top spot after beating Scotland by 72 runs on Sunday at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium. Pakistan will now face Australia in their semi-final game. As far as Scotland are concerned, they ended their campaign with five losses on the trot.
Babar, Malik take charge
After electing to bat first, Pakistan racked up a formidable score of 189 for four on the board. The Men in Green were a tad circumspect in the powerplay as they scored 35 runs and lost Mohammad Rizwan’s wicket to Hamza Tahir. Pakistan found themselves in a bit of hole after Fakhar Zaman became Chris Greaves’ first victim. In the first 10 overs, they could only manage to score 60.
From there on, Babar Azam and Co. stepped on the gas and racked up 129 runs in their last 10 overs. The skipper came to the party yet another time, scoring 66 off 47 with five fours and three sixes. Mohammad Hafeez also chipped in with a useful 19-ball 31. But in the end, it was Shoaib Malik’s unbeaten 18-ball 54, laced with one four and six sixes, that injected impetus into the innings.
Pakistan get home comfortably
Scotland found the going tough in the powerplay as they scored only 24 runs in it and lost the wicket of their skipper Kyle Coetzer. Matthew Cross, one of their prolific run-scorers, perished after Imad Wasim ran him out at the non-striker’s end. Dylan Budge came in place of Calum Macleod, but couldn’t open his account. George Munsey stayed until the 11th over and strained to find any momentum.
The southpaw huffed and puffed to a 31-ball 17 before Shadab Khan ended his painful vigil. Richie Berrington scored three ducks in the World Cup, but he made a comeback with a 34-ball half-century. The right-hander stayed not out on 54 off 37 with the help of four fours and one six. For Pakistan, Shadab Khan was the standout bowler as he ended his brilliant figures of 4-0-14-2.
