Shoaib Malik and Asif Ali keep a cool head to get Pakistan over the line
Shoaib Malik and Asif Ali were the catalysts of Pakistan’s victory in the encounter against New Zealand. The Kiwis batted first and posted a decent total of 134/8 on the board. Haris Rauf picked up 4 wickets with the ball to apply the brakes on the Kiwi innings.
The Pakistan side was reduced to 87/5 at the end of 14.5 overs and still needed another 48 runs to win off the last 5.1 overs. And, that is when the duo of Malik and Asif Ali joined forces together to knock the wind out of the sails of the New Zealand bowling attack.
While Ali went on the rampage and scored 27* at a strike rate of 225, his senior partner Shoaib Malik gave him excellent company and scored 26* off 20 balls. This sensational partnership between these two men allowed the Babar Azam-led side to go past the finish line with 5 wickets and 1.2 overs to spare.
Pace bowler Haris Rauf won the Player of the Match award for his superb bowling performance. Pakistan are now placed at the top of the points table in Group 2, after winning both their matches in the Super 12 stages of the competition. Pakistan’s next assignment in the 2021 T20 World Cup will be against the Afghanistan side on 29th October 2021.
