T20 World Cup 2021: Tabraiz Shamsi needs to undergo fitness test before Australia game
South Africa will get their T20 World Cup campaign underway on October 23.
South Africa had to deal with a major blow whilst their warm-up game against Pakistan. The team’s key spinner Tabraiz Shamsi was forced to leave the field after he picked up an injury. He suffered a mild groin strain while bowling in the match and owing to that, he couldn’t take part in the remainder of the match.
South Africa will, however, aim to get their prime spinner back in the team ahead of their opening match of the T20 World Cup against Australia. According to reports in Independent Media, Shamsi is recovering well but he will need to undergo a fitness test on Friday. The left-arm spinner has been in splendid form for the side lately and will be a key player for the Proteas, heading into the mega event.
“Tabraiz Shamsi is sitting out for the remainder of the match as a precaution due to a tight groin. The Proteas medical team will assess him overnight and determine next steps as required,” Proteas media liaison Siphokazi Sokanyile had earlier said.
Tabraiz Shamsi has been in terrific form lately
Currently ranked as the number one T20I bowler, Shamsi has exuded some good form in the last 12 months. He possesses the ability to bowl at different stages of the match and is instrumental in providing crucial breakthroughs to the team. Former West Indies spinner Samuel Badree has thus named Shamsi as the spinner to watch out for the marquee event.
South Africa finds itself in the Group 1 of the Super 12s round with Australia, England, West Indies, Bangladesh, and the first qualifier from Group A. The team has won both their practice matches and will enter the tournament with good form by their side. Shamsi looked in good touch in the practice match and will be a pivotal aspect for the side in the tournament.
Though the side won their both practice games the batting consistency is a tad bit of a concern for them. The Proteas have good opening options but their fragile middle-order has been an area of worry for them. As the team would kick start their campaign against Australia, they will look to put their ‘A’ game to the fore.
