T20 World Cup 2022: Ireland's George Dockrell tests positive for COVID-19, allowed to play vs SL

Cricket Ireland today confirmed that George Dockrell has been identified as potentially positive for COVID and is being managed in line with current local, national and ICC guidelines for the management of COVID-19.

Dockrell’s symptoms are very mild, however, team medical staff will manage his movements and interactions in line with tournament and current government protocols.

A positive COVID test does not impede Dockrell’s ability to play or train, but to keep the rest of the squad as safe as possible, he will travel separately to the squad on match and training days. In line with protocols, the ICC Chief Medical Officer, opposition team and stadium staff have been notified.

Ahead of the tournament, the ICC had cleared COVID-19 protocols stating that the player will be allowed to play even if he contracts the virus.

George Dockrell a crucial player for Ireland

Meanwhile, George Dockrell has been a crucial player for Ireland and they would love to see him get fit completely before their next match of the tournament. He was the one who stitched a crucial partnership of 119* runs with Curtis Campher against Scotland when the team seemed done and dusted in the steep chase. He scored 39 off just 27 balls to help the eventual Player of the Match Campher in the partnership.

Ireland managed to chase down 177 runs after struggling at 60-odd runs for four wickets down at one stage in the first half of the innings. Ireland are currently in Group 1 clubbed with Sri Lanka, Australia, England, New Zealand and Afghanistan. It will not be easy for them to come up on top and will have to play some extraordinary cricket, much like they played to beat West Indies to make it to the Super 12.

Their fans will be hoping that the team finally grabs the opportunity to face the top teams and create upsets in their group 1.
