The 2021 edition of the T20 World Cup is taking place between October 17 and November 14. As many as 16 teams are taking part in the tournament with the matches taking place in UAE and Oman. With T20 becoming a fan-favourite format over the years, the global event witnesses some mind-boggling action between the bat and the ball. Now what less one can expect when T20 stars from a nation join forces.
T20 World Cup 2021 Points Table Rules
As mentioned above, 16 teams are featuring in T20 World Cup 2021. However, all sides didn’t start at the same mark. While the top eight teams were already placed in the Super 12, the remaining eight sides were to battle it out in the preliminary stage, which would be played in a round-robin format, to get a place in the next stage.
Eight teams in the preliminary round were divided into two groups of four teams each. The top two teams from both groups then advance to the league stage. This way two groups of six teams each get finalized for the Super 12 stage.
Teams finishing in the top two then progress to the knock-out stage. Subsequently, two semi-finals and a final takes place and the winner gets the crown.
Speaking of the points system, the standings of each participant teams are determined based on a points system. A team gets 2 points for a win and 0 for a defeat. Points are shared equally in the cases where the game is either abandoned or ends in no result.
In case, multiple teams finish with same number of points, the Net Run Rate is used as a tie-breaker. The Net Run Rate is calculated as ‘the number of runs scored by the team to the number of overs faced’ to ‘the number of runs conceded by the team to the number of overs bowled in the same tournament.
Speaking of the past editions, India won the inaugural competition in 2007. The 2009 and 2010 edition saw Pakistan and England lifting the trophy respectively. West Indies lifted the title in 2012 while Sri Lanka got the glory in 2014. The last edition took place in 2016 which saw West Indies becoming the champions for the second time.
