Indian women’s ODI team captain Mithali Raj is celebrating her 37th birthday today on December 3, 2019. The right-handed batswoman from Hyderabad is a legend of cricket not only in India but everywhere else, having inspired many other girls to take up the sport as a profession while breaking stereotypes all over the country about girls and cricket.
She is one of the few cricketers in the world to have a career spanning over 20 years, having made her debut at the age of 15 in 1999 against Ireland and taking India to finals of two ICC Women’s World Cup. She had recently announced her retirement from the shortest format of the game to prolong her career in ODIs. During her birthday celebrations, actress Tapsee Pannu accompanied her during the cake cutting and confirmed her biopic as well.
“You will be proud of what you see of yourself on-screen”, says Taapsee Pannu to Mithali Raj
Taapsee Pannu recently played veteran shooter Prakashi Tomar in Saand ki Aankh and has played a hockey player in Soorma. This time it will be her playing Mithali Raj on the silver screen as she announced “Shabaash Mithu”, the biopic on Indian captain and a legend of Indian cricket.
She had previously said about starring in the movie in an interview with Hindustan Times, “I’d say that I’d love to be part of the Mithali film, but it’s too early right now to say it’s happening. I’m in talks about it. I’m doing another sports film, which will be announced soon.”
However, Pannu wishes Mithali on her birthday and confirmed the movie with a message of Instagram reading, “Happy Happy Birthday Captain @mithaliraj ! You have made all of us proud in more than many ways and it’s truly an honor to be chosen to showcase your journey on screen.”
“On this Birthday of yours I don’t know what gift I can give you but this promise that I shall give it all I have to make sure you will be proud of what you see of yourself on screen with #ShabaashMithu P.S- I am all prepared to learn THE ‘cover drive’ 🏏 #HappyBirthdayCaptain”
In a chequered career that started in 1999, Mithali has played 10 Tests, 209 ODIs and 89 T20I matches.
