Tabraiz Shamsi’s premature celebration left him embarrassed in Johannesburg
Shamsi was impressive with the cherry at the Wanderers.
South Africa had every reason to cheer the other night at the New Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg as they managed to brush aside Pakistan at the iconic venue by seven runs. Subsequently, David Miller and Co also slapped the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) number one ranked T20I team with a 2-0 series loss with one match to be played on Wednesday, February 8 at SuperSport Park in Centurion.
In the meantime, Tabraiz Shamsi, the Proteas’ chinaman bowler went through a rather embarrassing moment when the visiting team was chasing the mammoth score of 189. The incident took place in the fourth delivery of the 17th over from left-arm fast bowler Beuran Hendricks. At that point in time, Pakistan had 38 runs to get from 21 balls and they had as many as eight wickets in hand.
Tabraiz Shamsi left embarrassed
Hussain Talat and Asif Ali were in the middle. Hendricks bowled a full toss to Asif and the batter somehow mistimed the stroke and subsequently, the leather went sailing in the air. Shamsi ran in from the deep and took a sharp catch. Quite expectantly, he was delighted after getting hold of the ball and he made a ‘high flying’ celebration, which was pretty reminiscent of what Indian captain Virat Kohli does.
The entire South African contingent in the crowd was happy and the cricket team celebrated the dismissal together. Nevertheless, Asif refused to move from his crease as he felt that the ball the above the waist and hence the on-field rechecked it. During that while, Asif was seen tying his shoelaces and didn’t seem too flustered by the situation. The television replays showed that Asif wasn’t wrong.
The ball was way above the waist and the batsman got a much-needed life. In the meantime, Shamsi was left ruing the celebration and he went back to his fielding position for the next delivery. The tweaker had a good day with the ball, having conceded only 31 runs at an economy rate of 7.75. Asif couldn’t capitalise on the chance and perished for a couple to fast bowler Andile Phehlukwayo.
