Ross Taylor, the core of the Kiwi batting line-up retired from international cricket on April 4, after playing his last game against the Netherlands. The 38-year-old had broke out the news of his retirement back in December 2021, when he had mentioned that he’d be retiring at the end of New Zealand’s home season. Fittingly, in his final New Zealand, Ross Taylor took a catch to seal his team’s victory over the Netherlands by 115 runs.
Taylor has achieved laurels with the team, and his numbers speak for him. He’s the highest run-scorer for New Zealand in the Test and ODI format with 7,684 and 8,602 runs respectively. In the T20I format, he stands at the fourth position in the list of top scorers for his team, with 1,909 runs.
The veteran’s contribution to his team since his debut has been very generous. He has 40 career international centuries to his name, alongside three double centuries and 93 half-centuries. He has also served his team as a captain in 13 Test matches and led his team to victory against Australia and Sri Lanka in away games.
Ross Taylor score more than 18000 international runs
Ross Taylor played his last game for his country at Seddon Park in Hamilton, against the Netherlands. He scored a 16-ball 14 in his last game before being dismissed by Logan van Beek. He ended his cricket career playing 450 international games for his team. The NZ team was facing a downfall when he made his international debut in the year 2006.
Taylor played a major role in uplifting the team’s performance over the past many years, and today they proudly stand as the World Test Champions. He became the first player from his country to have played more than 100 matches in all three formats. In his final game, he received a guard of honor from the Netherlands players when he walked out with the bat.
He has been the backbone of the team for more than a decade, and his contribution to the side is incomparable. When the national anthem was being played in what was his final game for his side, tears rolled down his eyes as he stood there accompanied by his three children. The list of his achievements goes on and on, and Ross Taylor has earned huge respect from everyone across the nation and the cricketing fraternity.
Here’s how Twitter reacted to his retirement:
You’ve been a great ambassador of the game Ross! It was wonderful playing against you. The way you reinvented yourself over the years to adapt is an inspiration for all the young kids aspiring to be cricketers.
