Tamim Iqbal scores unbeaten 334, records highest first-class score in Bangladesh

Putting his excellent batting skills on display, declaring that there is a lot left in him to be seen, Bangladesh batsman, Tamim Iqbal, on Sunday played a record-breaking knock of 334*, breaking a national record in the process.

Iqbal, who is the highest run-getter for Bangladesh in international cricket, is currently playing for East Zone in Bangladesh Cricket League. The match in which he put up the score was being played between his team and Central one in Mirpur. In the process of amassing this big mountain of runs, Tamim got past two milestones, both of whom were previously held by equally potent batsmen.

En route his mammoth score of 334 runs, Tamim broke the record of the highest first-class score ever in Bangladesh by any individual. He got past the Sri Lankan batting legend, Kumar Sangakkara, who previously held the record. In 2014, Sangakkara had scored 319 runs in a Test match. The other record which was decimated by Tamim was of the highest score by a Bangladeshi player in first-class cricket. This one was held by Raqibul Hasan, who in March of 2007, had scored 313 runs to etch the record to his name.

The 30-year-old left-hander, started the day while on the score of 222 runs. He steadily progressed through to the 290s, facing the bowling of the likes of Mustafizur Rahman in the process. Once, in the vicinity of the triple ton, he switched gears and hammered his way to the ton. He hit 42 fours and 3 sixes, in his 426 balls long stay on the crease. Owing to his mammoth knock, his team posted a total of 555 for the loss of two wickets, before declaring the inning.

The knock would definitely be a reason for celebration for both Tamim himself and the Bangladesh Team management, as Tamim will be making a comeback at the highest level soon. The joy was pretty evident on the faces of the Bangladesh Cricket Board’s officials, who were seen applauding when Tamim got to the milestone.
