Bangladesh, on Tuesday, announced their 15-man squad for the upcoming Cricket World Cup 2019 in England and Wales. The Bangladesh selectors did spring a big surprise by leaving out the experienced Taskin Ahmed in order to make room for uncapped Abu Jayed. Taskin, who missed the New Zealand tour due to an ankle injury, was seen by many as the frontrunner to accompany the likes of Mashrafe Mortaza, Mustafizur Rahman and Rubel Hossain in Bangladesh’s pace attack.

However, the selectors instead went for Jayed who impressed with his swing bowling in the New Zealand Test series. In the pacer-friendly conditions, Jayed showed that he could make merry with the new ball. But still not many thought that the pacer would make it to the World Cup as he is yet to make his ODI debut. Abu has so far played just 5 Tests and three T20Is, picking up a total of 15 wickets.

And the snub seems to have completely broken Taskin Ahmed as he could not control his emotions while talking to the media after the squad announcement. Footage surfaced on social media showing Taskin surrounded by journalists having just heard the news that he would not be part of the squad. Bangladeshi news outlet BDCricTime posted the clip showing Tasking breaking down after the result as the fans rallied to throw their support for the pacer.

Bangladesh squad

Barring Taskin’s exclusion, there were not too many surprises in the Bangladesh squad. A big talking point was the inclusion of the all-rounder Mosaddek Hossain who last played for Bangladesh in the Asia Cup in September 2018. Other than that, all the players in the squad were very much expected to make it to the squad. Mashrafe Mortaza will lead the team in the mega event. Bangladesh will open their World Cup campaign against South Africa on June 2.
