Team India skipper Virat Kohli is currently recovering from a neck injury. The star batsman was expected to ply his trade in the County Championships after the conclusion of the IPL. Kohli had signed a month-long deal with Surrey for the same. During his stint with the County side, he was in frame to play 6 matches across the various formats for the team. However, days before he was schedule to arrive in England, he sustained a neck injury.
The injury saw him pulling out of his commitments with Surrey. With the injury, the threat of Kohli missing out on some international action also loomed large. He had already pulled out of the historic Afghanistan Test in Bengaluru. Also, he was set to miss the first T20I against Ireland due to a clash with his County game and the Irish fixture.
However, now that he is no longer going to be a part of the County season, Virat Kohli is set to travel with the national side to Ireland. Furthermore, the reports in Times of India suggest that Kohli is expected to fully recover from his neck injury by mid-June. The Indian captain will be undergoing a fitness test on June 15 that will decide the future course of his recovery. Meanwhile, the other members of the Indian team are also set to undergo rigorous fitness tests.
Surrey, an option; England, a responsibility
One of the top BCCI official remarked that playing County cricket was an option that Virat Kohli had. It is unfortunate that he could not do well. But playing for the national side is a duty and the Indian captain is trying very hard to be fit for the international commitments in England and Ireland.
“Surrey was an option; the England tour is a responsibility. He’s taken a break whenever there was a need for it. That’s why he sat out of the last T20 in South Africa and did not play in the Nidahas Trophy. It shows that priorities are well in place. It’s unfortunate that Virat hasn’t been able to leave for Surrey but recovering fully in time is the more important thing,” a source told TOI recently.
