Back in August, the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC), headed by the legendary Kapil Dev, re-appointed Ravi Shastri as the head coach of Team India. Shastri was on a 45-day extension period after the 2019 World Cup and the management decided to persist with him. Shastri, also a former Indian cricketer, edged out the likes of Tom Moody and Mike Hesson.
Now it has been learned that the CTC of the head coach will have a significant 20 per cent increase. It’s expected to take Shastri’s annual package to somewhere around 9.5 crore to 10 crore. In his last contract with the national team, Shastri had been drawing about Rs 8 crore.
The new contracts came into effect on September 1
As per reports in Mumbai Mirror, the support staff will be getting a hike as well. Bharat Arun and R Sridhar, the bowling and fielding coach respectively, are expected to draw somewhere around Rs 3.5 crore. Batting coach Vikram Rathour will be starting between Rs 2.5 crore to Rs 3 crore.
Rathour recently replaced Sanjay Bangar in his role. All the contracts are already into effect, starting September 1. After his appointment as the head coach, Shastri focussed on the importance of the transition period. He second tenure will be until the 2021 T20 World Cup in India.
“The reason why I came in here is the belief I had in this team, the belief that they could leave a legacy which very few teams have left behind which other teams going down will try and emulate,” Shastri was quoted as saying in bcci.tv after his appointment.
“Next two years is to see the smooth transition happening. You will get a lot of youngsters coming — in both white-ball setup and Tests. You need to identify another three-four bowlers to add to the pool by the end of our tenure. My endeavour by the end of this tenure would be to leave the team in a happier space so that they can set a legacy in the time to come,” he added.
Shastri first joined the team after Anil Kumble resigned from his position following his altercation with Indian skipper Virat Kohli. Under his tutelage, India has grown as a team, but hasn’t been able to win any ICC tournaments, the latest being the World Cup in England and Wales.
