In Indian cricket, the players are rewarded with contracts as per their performances on the field. Recently, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has decided to renew the contacts of the cricketers which could be in place even before the team flies to Sri Lanka for the Nidahas Trophy. The BCCI’s Committee of Administrators had a meeting in Mumbai where they decided on the plan.
The cricketers are currently bifurcated into grades of A, B and C where they get Rs 2 crores, 1 crore and 50 Lakhs respectively. However, they have decided to revamp the upcoming contracts for the players. “It’s important to have the new contracts in place without which the IPL player insurance policy cannot be executed,” a BCCI source was quoted as saying by India Today in a recent media interaction.
The new contracts for India
The media house has learned that the players might be divided into grades of A+, A, B, and C where performers in all formats will be the beneficiaries. MS Dhoni, the former Indian skipper, Virat Kohli and Ravi Shastri, the head coach, was also a part of the discussion meeting. MSD has been an integral part of the Indian team and has held the top contacts even after his retirement from Test cricket.
However, Dhoni is most likely to miss out on the topmost contract this time around. Another change which might be implemented is that the players won’t be eligible for an automatic contract if they make their T20 International debut. Nevertheless, they might make the Grade C category provided they make their Test or One Day International debut.
MSK Prasad, the chief selector, has been assigned the responsibility to categorize the players before they receive the contracts. Players like Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, and Cheteshwar Pujara aren’t currently a part of the ODI and T20I team. Nonetheless, they might be rewarded with incentives owing to India’s superior rankings in Test cricket.
