With just six days left for the ICC World Test Championship Final (WTC) between India and New Zealand, the pressure and expectations for the summit finale has reached its peak. While the former are pondering over their team combinations in the playing XI, the latter are busy battling it out with England in the second Test match.
India is currently spoilt for choices with a solid batting and bowling depth in their squad. If the conditions favor bowling, India have the likes of Mohammad Shami, Jasprit Bumrah, Ishant Sharma, Shardul Thakur and Mohammed Siraj. On the other hand, Ravindra Jadeja and Ravi Ashwin are there if the pitch is dry and slow.
Former India opener Virender Sehwag feels India should go with two spin bowling options in Jadeja and Ashwin due to their ability to score runs lower down the order. It’s a known fact that India’s pace bowlers are not reliable with their ability to bat longer at the crease. Sehwag stated the spin duo would help in scoring some valuable runs for the team.
“I don’t how the wicket would look like on June 18th but one thing I have always believed is that you need to play to your strengths. If India can play with five specialist bowlers that will be great thing because I still believe that two spinners will come into effect on fourth and fifth day,” Sehwag told, as reported by Hindustan Times.

The former opener also expressed his point on how team India doesn’t require a specialist batter at number six if the spin duos are part of the playing XI for the finale. Sehwag stated the pair’s ability to score some quick runs will help India post a good score against New Zealand.
“Two spinners will be good for India because both Ashwin and Jadeja are capable all-rounders. That also adds depth to your batting. You don’t need a sixth batsman with both of them around.”
India reached England on June 3 and are currently undergoing a strict quarantine in Southampton, the venue of the marquee clash which begins on June 18.
