'That mode of dismissal should be excluded from cricket' - Javeria Khan after getting out at the non-striker's end against SA

Pakistan Women were ousted by South Africa Women in Women’s T20 World Cup 2020 after the latter handed a 17-run defeat to Javeria Khan and Co. at Sydney Showground Stadium. After winning the toss and deciding to bat first, a Proteas Women amassed 136 runs on the scoreboard after Laura Wolvaardt rose to the occasion and smashed a brilliant half-century. Wolvaardt remained unbeaten on 53 runs off just 36 deliveries and stitched her knock around 8 fours. Marizanne Kapp also joined her and scored 31 runs to help her side post a competitive total.

Coming on to Pakistan’s run chase, it turned out to be an uphill task for the Women in Green as their wickets kept tumbling at regular intervals. South Africa Women drew first blood in the Powerplay itself after dismissing Muneeba Khan (12) in the fourth over. Omaima Sohail was also shown the exit door in the subsequent over and Nida Dar also departed to the pavilion in the seventh over.

It was none other than skipper Javeria Khan who was glued to the crease while ensuring that the scoreboard keeps refreshing. The skipper stitched a brilliant 31-run knock and it was looking like Javeria Khan was on her way to propel Pakistan to the triumph. However, her route was marred by an unfortunate dismissal in the 11th over. Javeria was at the non-striker’s end when Aliya Riaz drove the ball straight back and South Africa‘s Chloe Tyron managed to brush her fingers to the ball, which went on to hit the stumps at the other end.

Javeria was left vulnerable as she was well short of her crease when the ball hit the stumps. It was referred upstairs and it seemed that the Pakistan skipper was backing up way too far. Javeria had to leave the field after scoring 31 runs and it seemed like that was the turning point of the encounter.

Post her unfortunate dismissal and Pakistan Women’s loss, Javeria stated that she has learnt her ‘lesson’ and added that she wants such mode of dismissal to be’excluded from cricket’.

“I think it should be excluded from cricket. Such dismissal has happened even before but not in such crunch moments. Today was the first instance. Really disappointed by the way I got out. I also learnt the lesson that I should watch carefully where the ball is going and then run,” said Javeria post Pakistan’s loss.

Post the skipper’s departure, Pakistan Women were able to gather only 119 runs in their stipulated 20 overs as South Africa clinched the clash by a margin of 17 runs.
