‘That was obviously unfortunate’ – Kane Williamson opens up about cancellation of New Zealand’s tour of Pakistan

New Zealand captain Kane Williamson has finally opened up about the cancellation of his side’s tour of Pakistan last month. The Kiwis were set to play five T20Is and three ODIs in the Asian nation ahead of the T20 World Cup 2021. The players even landed in Pakistan. However, hours before the first clash, New Zealand Cricket (NZC) cancelled the fixtures citing security concerns.

Apparently, New Zealand government directed the national board to call the team back due to security issues. With the series being highly-awaited, the cancelled left the Pakistan cricket fraternity upset. Prominent names like Mohammad Hafeez and Shoaib Akhtar also took digs at the Kiwi team. On being asked about the whole episode, Williamson said it was unfortunate as the whole team was looking forward to play matches in Pakistan.

“That was obviously a very unfortunate, disappointing situation for Pakistani cricket fans and the cricketers, a decision that was outside of the players’ control. But all the guys were there looking forward to that series to start, and unfortunately, it didn’t happen. So it was very disappointing for all involved,” the Blackcaps skipper said.

Williamson’s comments came after his side’s five-wicket defeat against Pakistan in T20 World Cup 2021. The Kiwi skipper was also asked about whether Pakistan players or fans were aggressive to his team. In response, the talismanic batter hailed their opponents for showing the right spirit.

“No, they played in the right spirit, I believe, and a great spirit. They’re a very competitive, proud cricketing nation, and they showed that tonight. They’ve been outstanding in the first couple of games of this tournament. I’m sure they’ll be very, very competitive throughout the back end as well. Their hopes are high, no doubt,” added Williamson.

Meanwhile, Pakistan have been on a roll in this year’s T20 World Cup 2021. Before taking down New Zealand, the Men in Green defeated India by 10 wickets to end their long-running losing streak against their arch-rivals in World Cup events. With the other teams in the group being Scotland, Namibia, and Afghanistan, Pakistan’s place in the semi-finals is pretty certain.
