'The amount of freedom he gives is mesmerising' - Delhi Capitals' skipper Shreyas Iyer hails coach Ricky Ponting

Back in 2018, when Gautam Gambhir decided to hand over the captaincy of Delhi Daredevils to Shreyas Iyer some eyebrows were raised. Iyer wasn’t a natural leader and had not led his domestic side until then. He hadn’t even played a lot of matches at the international level. However, there wasn’t any other option left for the Delhi franchise. Ricky Ponting who the coach supported the call fully.

Finally, the season came to an end and with the new season coming on, Delhi came out with the new name, new logo, a new jersey and few other new players. As it turned out, this bunch youngmen led by Shreyas Iyer went through to the knockout stages and ended as the third-ranked team in the tournament.

Hopefully, IPL 2020 would happen and Delhi capitals franchise is eyeing for the trophy this time. Iyer has become an established member of the Indian limited-overs setup and has been performing really well at the international level.

Recently, during an interaction with his fans on Twitter, he was asked a few questions. Upon being asked about Ricky Ponting’s coaching style, the Mumbaikar praised the former Aussie legend. According to the Delhi captain, Ponting has given a lot of freedom to the youngsters at the Delhi franchise. “He’s an outstanding coach to work under and the amount of freedom he gives you is mesmerizing”, Iyer wrote on his Twitter.

Captaincy of Delhi capitals has done wonders to Shreyas Iyer as it has made him much more mature player. It has also helped him to get into the Indian side and now fix spot as the No.4 batsman in the ODI setup.

Delhi capitals have a lot of youngsters like Rishabh Pant and Prithvi Shaw. It seems that Ponting works with the youngsters quite nicely according to a past interview of the Delhi captain. “In the interview, he had said, “As youngsters, we are really happy and lucky to have him as our coach. The positivity that he spreads, the freedom that he gives to every player is something out of the box. That’s what we need as youngsters. We need someone to support us and back us. That’s what we get from Ricky,” said Iyer as quoted by TimesNow.
