2. ‘There’s no way you’re good enough to play for England’ – Mark Waugh to debutant Jimmy Ormond
Jimmy Ormond, who is a former right-handed batsman and a right-arm medium-fast bowler from England, had made it to the side in the 2001 Ashes. He had made his Test debut in that series and got involved in cheeky banter with Australia’s Mark Waugh.
Mark Waugh had asked him, “Mate, what are you doing out here? There’s no way you’re good enough to play for England.” However, this remark coming in from a senior player did not upset Ormond. He also came in with a fitting reply that intrigued the cricketing fraternity.
Replying to Waugh, he said, “Maybe not, but at least I’m the best player in my own family.” While making this remark, he referred to Waugh’s brother Steve who was the skipper of the Australian side.
