The 2023 edition of the eagerly-anticipated Ashes between arch-rivals England and Australia will commence on June 16 at the Edgbaston in Birmingham. The two cricketing giants will lock horns in a crucial five-match Test series with the final game to kickstart on July 27 at the Oval in London.
The clash between the two teams is arguably one of sport's greatest rivalries which began in the 1882/83 season. During that era, the English media published their opinions as ‘The Sports Times’ announced the passing of English cricket in a condolence statement.
Additionally, it stated that ‘the Ashes’ will be transported to Australia following the funeral. The series between the two teams became known as the Ashes series as a result. Since then, the Ashes trophy has been deemed to be the same ash vessel/urn, of which a replica now exists.
The two arch-rivals have contested in 340 Tests wherein the Aussies have triumphed 140 times whereas England have won on 108 occasions with 92 matches ending in a draw. It is worth mentioning that Australia have retained the trophy since the 2017/18 season. England last lifted the Ashes in 2015 at home after emerging victorious 3-2 in the five-match series.
